Lots of good discussions at the NetVision 2011 Election Debate but one exception was Internet rights and responsibilities. There was a general lack of understanding of this issue. The word “Brazilian” led some to snigger contemptuously, but let’s not allow debating flippancy dismiss good ideas without further thought.

The Brazilian context

InternetNZ’s goal is to keep the Internet “open and uncapturable” for New Zealand. This in a world that according to Freedom House (Freedom on the Net 2011):

“...the threats to internet freedom are growing and have become more diverse. Cyber attacks, politically-motivated censorship, and government control over internet infrastructure have emerged as especially prominent threats.”

InternetNZ is keen to support projects or initiatives that further our goals to protect and promote the Internet for New Zealanders. "Support" is both financial and non-financial.

This is a way for us to maximise the value to the wider community with our limited resources. By helping people and organisations aligned with our goals, our efforts are multiplied many times over what we can do on our own.

Paul Reynolds was one of the most well known and respected commentators and thinkers on the topics of information access and technological change in New Zealand.

Paul spent many years enlightening listeners of Radio New Zealand to the wonders and potential of technology, and never failed to make the most complex things sound simple.

We received 97 responses; a healthy 47 percent of the total membership.
