InternetNZ Community Projects Funding Round
Overview
Between August and October 2011 InternetNZ held a pilot funding round for Community Projects.
The focus of this funding round was on community-based projects that promoted education and research related to the Internet and internetworking, and widely and generally available access to the Internet.
InternetNZ set aside $50,000 for the Community Projects Funding Round (up to a maximum of $20,000 per project).
The funding round was structured in two stages:
- Stage 1 - applicants were invited to submit brief project outlines.
- Stage 2 - shortlisted applicants were invited to submit detailed proposals.
Result of pilot
- 45 Expressions of Interest were received, 7 of which were shortlisted.
- Most Expressions of Interest came from not-for-profit / NGOs and academia, followed by a smaller number of applications from individuals, local government and the private sector.
Funding recipients
The following projects were selected for funding:
Evaluating the Suitability of White Space Technology for rural Telecommunications in New Zealand (Jonathan Brewer)
This project will result in a report to InternetNZ that will evaluate the suitability of using 802.22 technology for rural telecommunications in New Zealand. The report will explore the technology, regulatory environment, risk factors, affected markets, practical uses, and existing trials of the technology.

Mapping the New Zealand Internet (WAND Research Group)
This project will set up the infrastructure required and then to map the New Zealand Internet infrastructure in as much detail as possible. The infrastructure should be such that repeated maps can be produced at regular intervals. There will be two phases: data collection and map production.

Cannons Creek Free Wireless Community (Digital Porirua)
This project will create a free UFB wireless community in one of the poorest communities in NZ. Digital Porirua Trust will install a number of wireless transceivers to create a wireless UFB community in Cannons Creek. They will work with the Porirua City Council and SmartLinx3 to make this service free to the Cannons Creek community.
